2009 Orionid Meteor shower Movie on Universetoday.com

Hi All,

Despite the partly cloudy skies,

I was able to capture 64 Orionid Meteors last night from my backyard in Dayton, Ohio.

Yes, thats right you can see the meteors right from your backyard. City lights usually wipe them out, but not the brighter ones, and there were lots of them.

The meteor rate really picked up around 5:00am …this is a 6.5 hour time lapse movie starting just after midnight and running until about 6:45am.

Also I have included a still image as well from this morning.

The movie was captured from my all sky cameras mounted on my backyard observatory on 10-21-09

My favorite thing about the Orionid Meteors is how fast they move…140,000 mph, just wonderful to watch.

Another nice Orionid display is underway this year!!!

Keep watching, there may be many more tomorrow morning…go out and look South East to find the constellation of Orion, look from around 1:00am until 7:00am, you will see dozens of meteors shooting out of Orion, by 6:00am Orion is high in the South. So far I've seen the peak activity occur around 5:00am the past few mornings.
